Kevin Padlo's two-run single in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and propelled the Seattle Mariners to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif., their fifth win in a row.
The Mariners finished with 11 hits, including three by Cal Raleigh and two each from Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez, but for the second night in a row, the Seattle bullpen was the key.
One night after throwing four scoreless innings in a one-run victory, four Mariners relievers combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings on Saturday.
Penn Murfee got the final out of the sixth inning, after which Ryan Borucki (seventh inning), Diego Castillo (eighth) and Erik Swanson (ninth, first save) each threw a scoreless frame.
Swanson, though, did not escape without some drama. With a runner on second and two out, Mariners manager Scott Servais decided to intentionally walk Mike Trout, bringing up Shohei Ohtani, representing the winning run.
Swanson was able to end it, getting Ohtani on a fly ball to right field.
Mariners starter Logan Gilbert (8-3) got the victory after going 5 2/3 innings and giving up three runs and nine hits, including solo homers to Ohtani and Kurt Suzuki.
Angels reliever Archie Bradley (0-1) got the loss.
Julio Rodriguez's solo homer in the first inning off Angels starter Patrick Sandoval gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead. The Angels' right-hander continued to find trouble in the following innings, the Mariners loading the bases in both the second and third innings before he escaped.
The Mariners had runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings as well, but again, Sandoval found a way out.
The Angels were able to rally against Gilbert, getting solo homers by Ohtani (third inning) and Suzuki (fourth inning) to take a 2-1 lead.
The Mariners immediately took advantage of the Angels bullpen with Sandoval out of the game, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to go up 4-2. Winker walked with the bases loaded to drive in one, and Padlo singled home two more.
The Angels got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit, RBI single by David MacKinnon, but the Mariners responded with a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Moore for a 5-3 lead.
