NEW YORK CITY, New York: Segway is recalling about 220,000 scooters in the U.S. because of a safety issue that can cause riders to fall, leading to injuries like bruises and broken bones.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says the folding mechanism in Segway's Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters can fail while in use, making the handlebars or stem fold unexpectedly. Segway has received 68 reports of this issue, with 20 people getting hurt.
Owners of these scooters should stop using them immediately and contact Segway for a free maintenance kit. The kit includes tools and instructions to check and fix the locking mechanism. Segway says the folding mechanism may need regular tightening, but no returns or replacements will be offered.
The recalled scooters were made in China and Malaysia and sold in the U.S. at stores like Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam's Club, as well as online, between January 2020 and February 2025. Prices ranged from $600 to $1,000.
